RBI Extended The Last Date For Exchanging Rs. 2000 Notes

The Reserve Bank of India has pushed the date for exchanging or depositing Rs 2000 notes to October 7, 2023, which was previously set for September 30, 2023.

According to an RBI press release dated September 30, 2023, this extension was decided upon after reviewing the situation when the original deadline for withdrawal had passed.

{Limit on exchange: Members of the public can exchange Rs 2000 banknotes up to a limit of Rs 20,000/- at a time}

The RBI press release also mentioned the new rules starting from October 8, 2023, for depositing or exchanging Rs 2000 banknotes:

a) You can't deposit or exchange them at regular bank branches anymore.

b) Individuals and businesses can still exchange Rs 2000 notes at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices, but there's a limit of Rs 20,000 at a time.

c) You can also deposit Rs 2000 notes into your Indian bank account through these RBI Issue Offices.

d) If you're in India, you can send Rs 2000 notes through India Post to one of the 19 RBI Issue Offices, and it will be credited to your bank account.

e) These transactions are subject to RBI and government rules, and you'll need to show a valid ID and follow any extra checks the RBI decides.

f) Government entities, law enforcement, courts, and other public authorities can deposit or exchange Rs 2000 notes at these RBI Issue Offices without any limits.

4. Rs 2000 notes are still considered valid for transactions.

What happens if a bank won't accept or exchange your Rs 2000 banknote?

If you're not happy with how a bank treats you in this situation, you can complain. First, talk to the bank and explain the problem. If they do not respond within 30 days or if you are still not satisfied, you can make a complaint using the Reserve Bank's complaint system.

Why are they getting rid of Rs 2000 banknotes?

These notes were introduced in 2016 to help people when the government stopped using Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Now, they have enough other types of notes available, so they stopped making Rs 2000 notes in 2018-19. Also, most Rs 2000 notes are getting old and won't last much longer. People don't use them very often for everyday transactions, and there are enough other types of money to go around.
