How To Check Income Tax Notices Online?

Following are the steps to check income tax notices online, (Procedures for new users

  • First, you need to go to the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department of India at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in 
  • Go to the next page & Click on the “I am New User” tab
  • You will be redirected to a new page where you have to fill in your PAN number, mobile number, and email & create a password then click on submit button
  • After this, you will get an activation link on your registered mobile number and email address
  • Then click on the login button, and feed your mail and password to log in
  • After login to the website, go to the setting option and choose the communication preference tab 
  • Choose the 'E-Mail' tab and press the 'Submit' button.
  • After completing the mentioned steps, you will receive future updates from the Income Tax Department on your registered email address.

Procedures For Old Users 

The first step is to go to the official website of the income tax department at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

On the home page, you will see an option “income tax e-filing” and click on that, you will be redirected to the page of the department's e-filing portal.

Then log in with your mail id & password. Once you logged in to the portal, you can see all the notices issued by the income tax department. (In case of being a new user, create an account). 

You can click on the notice to view the details. These details can include information on due tax and the nature of the notice. 

Relevant Documents to Reply to Income Tax Notice

The basic documents are as follows to reply to an income tax notice would be:

  • TDS certificates, Form 16 (Part A)
  • The Income Tax Notice copy
  • Income source evidence such as (Part B) of Form-16, Salary receipts, etc
  • Investment Proof if they are applicable

If the notice is about the non-filing of returns, you need to file your tax returns as soon as possible. In case you have already filed your returns, you can reply to the notice by furnishing a copy of the return filing disclosure.

If the notice is about the distinctions in your filed returns, you will be required to furnish a supporting document for the claims made in your returns.
