Income Tax Department Takes Action Against Tax-Evading Social Media Influencers. Find Out More

The Income Tax Department is taking a closer look at not just your financials and filed Income Tax Returns (ITRs), but also your social media posts. Surprisingly, your social media activity can now raise suspicions of tax evasion.

According to information shared on the CA Club of India's official website, the Income Tax Department has sent notices to 15 social media influencers who showcased their extravagant shopping sprees and lavish trips abroad, while reporting minimal or no income tax payments.

These influencers have been asked to provide clarifications about their sources of income and explain why they haven't paid their fair share of income tax.

In a recent development, the Income Tax Department has taken a step further by utilizing data analytics to examine the social media accounts of influencers. They aim to identify any disparities between their social status and the income declared in their Income Tax Returns (ITRs). By leveraging data analytics, the department is investigating whether social media influencers are potentially underreporting their income.

The department has issued income tax notices to 15 influencers from various domains such as Bollywood, fashion, lifestyle, and travel. These influencers have been requested to disclose their income details from sponsored content, brand endorsements, and other sources.

Additionally, the income tax department has sought information on their expenses related to travel, clothing, accommodations, and more.

The Income Tax Department's recent action against media influencers aims to improve income tax compliance among high-earning individuals who may be evading taxes while filing their ITRs.

For social media influencers, it is crucial to stay informed about the new income tax rules that apply to them to avoid receiving income tax notices in the future. Being aware of these regulations is essential for maintaining compliance.

Here are the key income tax rules that apply to social media influencers:

1] The income tax rule applies to all social media influencers with an earning income of Rs. 2 lakhs in a single FY.

2] Social media influencers are subject to a fixed tax rate of 30 percent on their gross income.

3] Influencers can claim tax deductions on their expenses such as equipment purchases, travel, and other eligible expenditures.

4] These new income tax regulations for social media influencers came into effect on April 1, 2023.
